How to build an RFID inventory system
Steps to design an RFID inventory system that works in production: what to tag, where to read, how software should behave, and how to roll out.
1. Decide what deserves RFID
Tag high-value or high-volume SKUs first. Leave low-cost bulk items on barcode if RFID economics do not make sense.
2. Design read zones
Receiving docks, cages, and packing tables need clear RF zones. Bad antenna placement creates missed reads and false confidence.
3. Make software the source of truth
Readers are sensors. Software must own locations, movements, exceptions, and reports — with barcode fallback for exceptions.
4. Roll out in phases
Pilot one zone, measure count time and variance, then expand. EastmarkHK typically delivers a pilot before full-site tagging.
